The Conflict Resolution and Mediation Certificate Training is the first step in becoming a YCRC volunteer mediator.  The training is also beneficial for individuals looking to learn skills for effective communication and dealing with conflicts.

The YCRC Conflict Resolution and Mediation certificate training addresses all of State of California's Dispute Resolution Program's Act of 1986 regulations for training (Article 3, Section 3622).  The 36–hour training program includes lectures, discussions, communication skills exercises, and mediation process role-play. Topics and skills covered in the training program include:
  • Introduction to the nature of conflict (the cycle of conflict, factors that escalate and de-escalate conflict).
  • Differences in conflict engagement styles and preferences.  The impacts of race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, and education on how individuals and groups react to conflict.
  • Introduction to dispute resolution (history, practices, dispute resolution within and outside the context of the Justice system in California). 
  • Introduction to community mediation (guiding principles including confidentiality and voluntary participation, characteristics of the community mediation model).
  • The role of the mediator in the community mediation model (impartiality, confidentiality, assisting participants in communication, preparing participants for joint sessions.)
  • Effective communication and conflict resolution skills and techniques for the community mediator (active listening, open net question, building trust, reframing, facilitating mutual understanding and summarizing). 
  • Ensuring safe expression of heightened emotions and disagreements. Fostering understanding and agreements among participants (exploring options, problem-solving and the mediator’s role in reality check).  

Continuing Education Credit: This training also meets the qualifications for 40 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT, LCSW, LEP, and LPCC as required by the California Board of Behavioral-Sciences. Yolo Conflict Resolution Center’s Board approved provider number is #PCE 5798.

Volunteer as a Mediator
Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization and we could not provide our services without their dedication and service.  If you would like to become one of our volunteer Community Mediators, you must be a certified community mediator or participate in the YCRC 36 Hour Conflict Resolution and Mediation Certificate Training. We provide a limited number of scholarships to help us maintain the diversity of our mediator pool. Read more about becoming a volunteer mediator.
